God Bless
the Girl

Thomas Riley Smith c.1998 - 2022

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord to keep you
safe from every wicked thing,
and still the voices of the
ones who’d bring you down,
to let mine rise above
a comforting sound.

God bless the girl,
put your angels all around her.
God bless the girl,
light up her entire world.
God bless the girl. God bless the girl.

I get so mad at the world
when I see how it disrespects
the beautiful and the kind.
Sometimes I almost hold her too tight,
I can’t let any more damage
be done. So I drop to my knees
by her feet I shout, please
God take the pain from this
innocent one, and I thank you
for the new day that’s begun.

And when she’s smiling
all my demons run away and
with one kiss, I’m in heaven.

God bless the girl.
Paint flowers on her dreams.
God bless the girl.
Bring her sunshine every morning.
God bless the girl. God bless the girl.

Light white candles all the way
up any path that she takes.
Put a gentle breeze at her back and
sweep away all the stumbling stones.
Make my eyes into mirrors so that
she can see all the beauty
that I see and if there’s anything,
anything that I can do to make her smile.
Lord, tell me, tell me, tell me.

God bless the girl.
Put your angels all around her.
God bless the girl.
Light up her entire world.
God bless the girl. God bless the girl.

God shine your light on this
innocent one, and I’m believing
in the new day that’s begun.

And when she’s smiling
all my demons run away,
and with one kiss I’m in heaven.

God bless the girl. Now I’m thinking
that everything will be alright.
God bless the girl. But I’ll keep
praying morning, noon and night.
God bless the girl. God bless the girl.
