History of
the World

Thomas Riley Smith c.2021 - 2022

Carry on you daughters and carry on you sons.
You don’t know what your elders have done,
do ya? They did it for silver and they did it for go
and they did it for us.
Sometimes, they just did what they were told.
They did it for good and they did it for bad.
They did it for themselves and they gave away
all that they had.

Hand me downs and hands up.
When we gonna grow up?
The history of the world lives in this town.

There’s a bakery and a hardware store.
Bread and nails since 1934.
There’s a diner where they ate without WiFi.
Some of us talk and some won’t even try.
They tried to get it right, but
sometimes It all went wrong.
knocked down to the ground get back up.
That’s what made their weakness strong.

Hand me downs and hands up.
When we gonna grow up.
The history of the world lives in this town.

Everyone is welcome in our little town.
Everyone is welcome, come on in and sit down.
Everyone is welcome ‘cause
that’s the way these folks were raised.
Everyone is welcome, and they’re welcome to stay.

Hand me downs and hands up.
When we gonna grow up?

Carry on you daughters and carry on you sons.
You don’t know what your elders have done, do ya?
They did it for silver and they did it for gold,
and they did it for us.
Sometimes, they just did what they were told.
They did it for good and they did it for bad.
They did it for themselves, so they
wouldn’t lose the life that they had.

Hand me downs and hands up.
